For a long while now, I’ve wanted to go to a retreat, but something always stopped me. So eventually the opportunity came up, and I was able to experience my first one. In the desert. At the end of May. At Alma Retreat. I sure know how to pick my timings.
All About Alma
Alma Retreat is a Bedouin-style campsite offering activities designed to energize and inspire. The Alma holistic approach “focuses on the mind, heart and body in order to instill long-lasting changes.” This includes activities such yoga sessions, art classes, and group discussions. As well as tailor-made diets and fitness sessions.
Founder, Sarah Arnold wanted to create a space that offers 5-star content and service despite being in the middle of the desert. Therefore, each cabin is beautifully designed with a double bed or twin and has an outdoor en suite. Bathrobes, towels, and soap are provided in every cabin.
As I previously mentioned, something always stopped me from booking a retreat. Maybe I found the idea of doing a week-long detox too daunting or I just didn’t have the budget. But whatever my reasons, Alma had an answer for it. Firstly, it was only two days. Perfect for a weekend getaway. Or an introduction to the concept of retreats, as in my case. Secondly, it is very reasonably priced!
I opted for the juice detox and was pleasantly surprised to find that the programme had been specially chosen by Sarah and provided by Detox Delight. Luckily there were three of us juicing, so whilst the rest were eating I had others to keep me company. But I did catch a glimpse of the food, and it did look yummy. The silence whilst they ate was a testament to how good it was.
We started and ended the day with the sun, meditating and practicing yoga. The rest of the day was then divided between fitness classes, eating (or juicing) and creative sessions.
Oh, and the sweat tent! My favourite bit. So they heat the stones outside during the day and bring them into a cabin enclosed with something similar to blackout curtains. I’m sorry I don’t have the technical term. Once there, the stones heat the room, creating a natural sauna. At first, I didn’t think it would work as well as I wanted, but it did. I emerged from the tent incredibly sweaty.
Prepare For Next Season
License pending, next season promises to be even better as they hope to incorporate massages and spa treatments. And whilst there is a general schedule in place, certain weekends may change. Some weekends might be focused on a certain practice or particular diet.
For anyone planning to visit Dubai or the U.A.E, just book that weekend regardless of any theme. It’s a great alternative to the usual desert excursions and comes with so many more benefits.
For those already living in the U.A.E, book as soon as possible! Escape the city. Relax. Take time for yourself. It’s cheaper than a brunch and after party. And much better for you.
For those not sure about the whole detox retreat thing, the environment here is really relaxed with everybody just embracing the quite. Despite having a network connection, there were no phones in sight. And all the activities are optional, so if you wanted to skip something, that’s more than ok.
It’s your retreat, and you can make it what you want.
DISCLAIMER: I wasn’t asked or paid to do this review. I just really enjoyed my experience and wanted to share it.
